Самолюбие (l'amour-propre)

Amour-propre — центральное понятие всей книги: любовь к себе и ко всему
ради себя, скрытый двигатель поступков, которые мы называем добродетелью,
дружбой, любовью, скорбью. Это не бытовой «эгоизм»: самолюбие у
Ла Рошфуко — хитрое, невидимое самому себе, способное маскироваться даже
под аскезу и самоотречение; оно «идёт на сторону тех, кто с ним воюет» и
«торжествует в собственном поражении». Полный его портрет — большая максима
1665 года (ms.1), которую автор сам изъял из последующих изданий: слишком
открыто показан механизм. «Самолюбие — искуснейший из льстецов» (перевод
наш, m.2: «L'amour-propre est le plus grand de tous les flatteurs»).

искра; здесь разум — адвокат самолюбия (m.102: «The head is ever the dupe
of the heart»).
